Understanding Search Engine Optimization

Search engine optimization has become a common term in the virtual world of Internet marketing. As the name suggests, search engine optimization is a technique for improving website rankings. The better the ranking, the more traffic the website is considered to attract. The term was first used in 26-July, 1997 which appeared on one of the popular contemporary message board called Usenet.com. The idea of Internet advertising through ‘search engine optimization’ was the primary focus of the message. It spoke of enhancing the quality of the website content in order to gain popularity and pull in more traffic, ultimately resulting in better rankings in the various search engines. However, to use the search engine optimization technique effectively it was important that the website owners understand how it works. It was also necessary to find out what are the expectations of the Internet users, while they are browsing through different websites. It is this awareness that gave birth to search engine optimization.
Features
Search engine optimization is closely related to terms such as web crawlers, web spiders and web robots. These are programs which facilitate searching and listing websites in the search engines. They work in a very systematic way to pull in the websites with the relevant content and list them up. It is interesting to know how they work. Let us suppose that you have typed ‘weight loss techniques’ in the ‘search’ field of any search engine and hit the ‘Enter’ key. As soon as you hit ‘Enter’ these web crawlers will search all through the Web or Internet for the websites containing the specified words in the ‘Search’ field. The web crawlers are designed to perform this search process very fast and within a second you will have a list of websites containing information about the search topic you have typed in. The topmost website will contain the most relevant data and thus, has gained the top ranking according to the search criterion of the crawlers.
Types
Search engine optimization techniques are classified into two categories, namely, ‘white hat’ and ‘black hat’. As soon as website owners learnt that the ranking of their websites depended on the relevance of the content, they started to make their website content rich and relevant. In order to get top rankings, some even started using content with ‘stuffed’ keywords which means the content was full of supposed ‘keywords’ rather than being good to read and informative. They used keywords repeatedly without taking care of relevance or ease of reading. Some also used hidden keywords so that they were not visible but were present in the background of the websites. These techniques eventually came to be known as ‘black hat’ strategies while good search engine optimization techniques such as relevant and informative content, appropriate usage of keywords and use of links were called ‘white hat’ strategies.
Benefits
The benefits of search engine optimization are reflected in more traffic, better ranking, and free advertising of your website. Moreover, search engine optimization gives you more control to optimize your website advertising as compared to other modes. You can change the content as many times as you want to achieve the desired popularity and ranking. Better ranking would mean better traffic and better traffic would result into potential business prospects.
Misconceptions
Unlike the common conception, search engine optimization is not so simple. Although mostly site owners themselves take up the job of making their website content rich and relevant it is important to have sound knowledge and proper training on search engine optimization techniques. The content of your website should not only be easy to search for but also be well informative and relevant. A good amount of research is necessary to get an idea what are the most searched keywords and then work on those keywords accordingly. The most complex part is writing the content once you have decided on the keywords. If you do not use the keywords intelligently, your website may not get good ranking. On the other hand if you over-use keywords, the crawlers might categorize your website as one with ‘black hat’ strategies and not include it in the search engine listing.
Considerations
It is a common practice to hire professionals for managing search engine optimization techniques and creating relevant content. A host of companies have come up to promote search engine optimization advertising. However, be careful while choosing any such company who makes big promises and guarantees top rankings. Many of these companies use ‘black hat strategies which might make your website black listed. You should be aware that website content can change daily and thus, no such guarantee can be given that one website will remain on the top forever. The best way to deal with search engine optimization is to not bother too much about the ranking and concentrate on good relevant content and keep improving it. If you are providing information to the readers about what they are looking for it would automatically fetch your popularity and better ranking.
